He enlisted in the Army in 1959 and subsequently received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Science degree in Engineering from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His military career spanned four decades and covered geographical areas from the United States to Vietnam, Korea, and Okinawa. Upon retirement from Tulane University in 2006, Jack became a principal owner of Simon-Meyer Charlotte, LLC, a construction-consulting firm located in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has written many articles on technical subjects, leadership, and engineering education. Additionally, Jack authored a leadership book, “Leadership: Taking the High Road,” three mysteries with engineering twists and a history one of the most unique military organizations in existence, the Joint Communications Support Element. To this day he sees his greatest accomplishment as convincing Judy Schultz of Bangor, Pennsylvania to join him on an incredible journey through life. They have three beautiful daughters, seven wonderful granddaughters, and an unstoppable grandson – appropriately named Jack.
