North East Business Development Lead at Tesla Energy

Carlos Gonzalez is the North East Business Development Lead for Tesla Energy. He advances grid modernization and innovation by developing and commercializing projects that transform how the grid is built and operated. Carlos develops business opportunities for Tesla Grid Services by building customer and utility relationships, developing commercial proposals and business strategies, supporting contract negotiations, and facilitating project deployments.

Formerly, Carlos was Director of Grid Engineering Solutions at SolarCity. His role spanned business development, project management, and technical policy. Carlos worked collaboratively with utility engineering organizations, regulators, national research laboratories and other stakeholders to identify opportunities to integrate and leverage DERs to benefit the grid and its customers.

Prior to SolarCity, Carlos specialized in electric distribution system planning and reliability. He managed the electric distribution long-term investment plan at Pacific Gas and Electric, where he governed the allocation of ~$1.5B annual capital investments in infrastructure across different programs. He supported the commissioning of Pacific Gas & Electric’s first utility-scale battery deployments, including 6 MW / 42 MWh of batteries used to provide distribution services and participate in CAISO energy and ancillary services markets. He institutionalized cross-functional roles and responsibilities for operating and maintaining storage resources, including substation, grid operators, and energy supply teams. He also developed a methodology to identify system needs for distribution deferrals in PG&E’s first energy storage RFO solicitation. Carlos holds an MBA from UC Berkeley and a BA in Economics from Macalester College.
